This term refers to when a person chooses to be secretive in the public sphere about their gender history, either after transitioning or while successful passing. Also referred to as going stealth or living in stealth mode.

[The phrase “chooses to be secretive” can be read as derogative. The GLAAD page on gender language explains that“While some transgender people may use these terms among themselves, it is not appropriate to repeat them inmainstream media unless it’s in a direct quote. The terms refer to a transgender person’s ability to go through daily life without others making an assumption that they are transgender. However, the terms themselves are problematic because “passing” implies “passingas something you’re not,” while “stealth” connotes deceit. When transgender people are living as their authentic selves, and are not perceived as transgender by others, that does not make them deceptive or misleading.” “GLAAD MediaReference Guide – Transgender.” GLAAD, 19 Apr. 2017, www.glaad.org/reference/transgender.]
